Two dopes and a microphone

Dopey started in January 2016 with Dave Manheim and Chris O’Connor, two former IV heroin addicts in recovery who loved to talk about all of it: the coke they smoked, snorted and shot, the pills, the weed, the booze, and every consequence that came with them. Episode one was called “First IV Heroin, Coke, Recovery, Trauma, Detox.” It went from there.

Toodles for Chris

After two and a half years of making the show together, Chris relapsed and died of a fentanyl overdose. Dopey kept going, first to mourn him and then to keep doing what the show was always for: keeping addicts and alcoholics company. Listeners still sign off their emails and stories with the same three words: toodles for Chris.

What Dopey is

Dopey tells the truth about drugs, addiction and recovery, whether that means laughing at the worst day in rehab or crying about the people we lost. Dave talks with celebrities and nobodies, mines the world for stories rife with debauchery, and takes a hard look at the different ways people get better, from the twelve steps to harm reduction to medication-assisted treatment. No single path gets a monopoly here.

The Dopey Nation

The listeners are the show. They call in, write in, draw fan art, record songs, show up at DopeyCon every year and hang out on Patreon and Discord. If you have a story, Dave wants to hear it.
